Rubia tinctorum • 25 seeds • $10
Madder (Rubia tinctorum) is an ancient perennial dye plant grown for the rich red pigments found in its roots. This perennial produces sprawling stems, whorled leaves, small yellow flowers, and long, dye-rich roots that deepen in color as the plant matures.
Harvest the roots after two or more years of growth to create a beautiful range of natural reds, pinks, coral, and warm terracotta, depending on the fiber and dyeing process.
Growing: Start seeds indoors several weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in spring once the soil has warmed. Sow about ¼" deep in moist, well-drained soil and keep warm and evenly moist until germination. Madder can be slow and uneven to germinate, so be patient. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, choosing a sunny location with room to spread. Madder is a vigorous perennial that spreads by underground runners, so consider giving it a dedicated bed or growing it in a large container.
