Grow the plant that makes natural yellow.

Weld, also known as Dyer's Rocket, is a historic dye plant prized for its brilliant, lightfast yellow. In its second year, this biennial produces tall, fragrant flower stalks reaching 4–6 feet, bringing graceful height and pollinators to the garden.

Harvest the flowering stalks fresh or dried to create an impressive range of natural yellows, from bright lemon and golden yellow to olive green, depending on the mordant and dyeing process. The leaves can also be harvested for dye in the first year.

Growing: Direct sow in early spring or late summer. Surface sow seeds, gently pressing them into the soil without covering, as they need light to germinate. Keep moist and be patient—germination can take several weeks. Grow in full sun with well-drained soil, spacing plants 6-8 inches apart. Weld typically flowers in its second year.

A little something extra
Every Wool & Palette yarn order includes a complimentary packet of Weld seeds. If you're purchasing yarn, there's no need to add this packet to your cart—we'll include one for you.
